Why is Feldspar important?

Feldspar is considered as the gifts from the Earth, and the humans have stated that Feldspar needs to be cherished for upcoming generations. Feldspar is the name provided to the rock-forming silicate minerals that are in a large group. Feldspar is found in Sedimentary, Igneous, and Metamorphic rocks across the globe. Feldspar minerals hold identical physical properties, chemical compositions, and structures. Some of the standard Feldspar includes Albite (NaAlSi3O8), Orthoclase (KAlSi3O8), and Anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8).

Feldspar formed 60% of the terrestrial rocks and used primarily in industrial applications for alkali and alumina content. Feldspar is found in our daily handling products, namely protection glasses, shower basins in bathrooms, the floor tiles, drinking glasses, insulation fibreglasses, the tableware’s, and more.

The Feldspar is an aluminum silicate that holds potassium, calcium, barium, iron, sodium or a combination of these elements. Igneous rocks develop most of the continental crust in the Earth-like diorite, granodiorite, and granite. Feldspars are touted as the significant constituents of the primary rock types in Earth’s oceanic crust, namely basalt, and gabbro.

Feldspar minerals are used for manufacturing different ceramic and glass products. They are also used as fillers in rubber, plastics, and paints. It includes sunstone, amazonite, moonstone, labradorite, and spectrolite.

Importance of Feldspar Minerals:

In the United States, there are more than 600,000 metric tons of Feldspar created each year. These feldspars are then crushed into fine powders or granules and then used in industries which develop ceramic tile, paints, pottery, plate glass, fiberglass insulations, plastics, container glasses, and other similar products. Most of these types of products play a significant role in both residential and commercial construction. The demand for Feldspar is increasing day by day, and it’s supported by the health of different industries, including the construction sector.

90% of the Feldspar taken in the Unit States belongs to Quarries in Idaho, Virginia, South Dakota, North Carolina, California, and Oklahoma. These types of locations produce plenty of Feldspar so that supplying them is made easier. The resources present for upcoming production are high.

Alkali feldspars are commonly used for commercial uses when compared to plagioclase feldspars. Soda spar or Albite is mostly used in ceramics. Few anorthosites and feldspar-rich rock larvikite are used for both exterior and interior facing slabs. Apart from these, some of the feldspars are used as gemstones. For instance, Spectrolite with intense color flashes, Opalescence as Moonstones, Sunstones in the range of yellow to orange to brown along with a golden sheen. The reason for this effect is due to the reflections from red hematite inclusions. Amazonite belongs to Microcline, a green variety of it that is used in the form of an ornamental material.

Orthoclase is one of the intrusive, felsic igneous rock primary constituents like granodiorite, syenites, and granite. It is also present in gneisses and metamorphic politic schists. The Microcline occurs in pegmatite and granitic rocks, and this is also found in sandstones, conglomerates, and other sedimentary rocks. It is also found in metamorphic rocks. At the starting of the 21st century, it was Turkey who was leading the feldspar production across the globe. Some of the other producers of Feldspar include China, the United States, and Italy.
